Plumbing education & training options

Plumbing trade school

Trade school is a great option to get the education and training needed to become a plumber.

If your goal is to get in, learn what is necessary to become a plumber, and get out, then trade school is a great option for you. Taking this path will allow you to avoid all of the unrelated courses like history and English, and only learn what is directly applicable to your future career.

Plumbing trade school can be completed in 1 to 2 years, and typically costs between $1,250 and $3,000. Trade school will prepare you for entry level work and initial certification exams.

Community college

Getting an Associate’s degree from a community college is a great option if you are looking to own your own business someday. It gives you the opportunity to take business courses along with plumbing related courses. It will also give you the chance to get a more well rounded education with history and English courses.

Community college typically takes about two years to complete and costs about $3,440 per year on average.

Plumbing apprenticeship

An apprenticeship is the most cost effective option to obtain the necessary training to become a plumber. Instead of paying, like you would do with trade school or community college, an apprenticeship allows you to get paid to learn.

Department of Labor apprenticeship programs typically take between four to five years and include 144 hours of classwork and 2,000 hours of on-the-job training per year.
