Common Questions
If you're pursuing a career as an HVAC technician, you will most likely need to get your EPA 608 certification. The EPA 608 certification was introduced as part of the Clean Air Act and requires that technicians handling refrigerants are certified. To earn your certification you must pass a one-time exam administered by an EPA-approved certifying organization. Your certification never expires and there is no requirement for renewal.
If you're planning to work as an HVAC technician, an EPA 608 certification is a must-have. This certification is required by the EPA and employers will verify if you have received your certification or not. EPA regulations define a technician as an individual who performs any of the following activities:
- Attaching and detaching hoses and gauges to and from an appliance to measure pressure within the appliance.
- Adding refrigerant to or removing refrigerant from an appliance.
- Any other activity that violates the integrity of a motor vehicle air conditioner (MVAC)-like appliance or small appliance (other than disposal).
Yes! Faraday is approved by the EPA to provide the EPA 608 Technician Certification test.

There are four different types of certifications you can receive when it comes to the EPA 608. Each type allows you to work with specific types of appliances and refrigerants.
- Type I: Certification to service small appliances
- Type II: Certification to service or dispose of high- or very high-pressure appliances, except small appliances and MVACs
- Type III: Certification to service or dispose of low-pressure appliances
- Universal: Certification to service all types of equipment
You'll get access to our on-demand video library, online study tools, hundreds of practice questions, and the ability to take the exam online with Faraday for $199. You'll get access to the course for life.
The EPA 608 Certification exam requires a minimum score of 72% per section or 84% for open-book format exams.
If you study the material beforehand, the EPA Certification exam shouldn’t be too hard. If you try taking it without studying, however, it will likely be difficult, especially if you don’t already have HVAC training or experience.
To get your EPA 608 Universal Certification, you must pass all four sections which have 25 questions each. To just get your normal EPA 608 Certification, you must take the Core exam and one specific type (Type I, Type II, or Type III).
The EPA 608 Certification never expires. Once you pass the exam and receive your certification, you never have to get recertified.
